What Are Freckles?
What Causes Freckles?

What are freckles? Pesky or cute, what causes freckles? Let’s study and treat them here.

Not much time to take. This is gonna be short and sweet.

what are freckles; fade frecklesWhat are freckles?

Skin freckles are flat little brownish spots caused by sun exposure and the melanin pigments that give color to our skin. They pose no health risk at all, and are absolutely harmless.

There are two types of freckles –

  • Ephelides – red or light brown spots that usually appear during summer but disappear in winter. These are common to fair-skinned people and mostly genetic in nature.

  • Lentigines – also called lentigo complex, they’re spots that are darker than ephelides, which may be tan, brownish or black. These don’t fade in winter.

What causes freckles?

The sun is the number one cause for skin freckles. Sun exposure thickens the outer skin layer (epidermis) and increase melanin production.

Darker-skinned individuals are less sensitive to sun exposure than fair-skinned persons. But that doesn’t mean the former won’t get sunburned. Nevertheless, it is the uneven distribution and heavy deposits of the melanin pigments that causes freckling.

How to prevent skin freckles

Strong sunscreen and avoiding sun exposure are the only ways to prevent freckles. Period.

How to fade freckles or get rid of them

Big question – Can you really get rid of freckles? If so, how will you do it?

There are safe and effective methods. The first two being more expensive and done in doctor’s clinics, and the next two are the more affordable topical solutions.

  • Cryosurgery - A light freeze using liquid nitrogen used to remove freckles.

  • Laser treatment - Green light laser treatment can lighten and eliminate freckles safely and effectively. This is a simple and safe procedure with a high success rate and a low risk of scarring like cryosurgery.

  • Tretinoin – Vitamin A acid or Retin-A, sometimes formulated in bleaching creams and helps to make freckles lighter when applied over a period of time.

  • Skin bleaching creams – Freckles are a little stubborn to fade, if remove at all. Skin bleaching creams help to just fade them. If you’re a fan of these products, I thought you should know that…

    • Vantex skin bleaching cream is hydroquinone-based, so please take a look at this hydroquinone side effects page.
    • Ashe skin whitening cream contains mercury (although unconfirmed reports from forums), another harmful substance in skin lightening.

Freckles are not cancerous. But it’s important to note that not all brown spots on skin are freckles. For your own peace of mind, if you suspect anything unusual, go see your dermatologist.

For those who love freckles, I found this quote for you –

"He’s home! The Western giant smiles,
And twirls the spotty globe to find it;
This little speck, the British Isles?
'Tis but a freckle, never mind it."
by Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894)
