Using the products during pregnancy

by Melissa
(USA)

Dear Maria, I am 5 months pregnant and have some dark spots that I would like to lighten. These spots were not caused by the pregnancy as they have been around for a long time prior to my pregnancy. Is it safe to use the soap and whitening cream during this time? I am not worried discomfort/skin sensitivity. But I need to know if the ingredients of the soap/cream may be harmful to my baby or myself during this time. Thank you.

Answer:

Hi Melissa, I do not suggest using any skin lightening product during pregnancy or even when you're breastfeeding. Skin lightening involves exfoliation and skin peeling while pregnancy tends to expand skin. It is not a good match. Besides, the products are acid-based that contain lactic and retinoic acid, which are good for skin exfoliation and renewal, but penetrates the epidermal (topmost) layer of our skin, which is not recommended during child-bearing months.

So it is better to wait after giving birth. :-)

Maria
