Skin Whitening Remedies
How Do They Really Work?
Ok this can be a little technical how a skin whitener works, but it is important that you are aware what your skin whitening remedies do to your skin, and what you can do to help reclaim an even and smooth skin tone.
So let’s get started.
Why Do You Have Skin Discoloration?
Dark spots are caused by skin trauma – insect bites, friction, injury, etc. It affects most people, regardless of race. When healed, local pools of darker pigments remain. The discoloration is determined by your baseline skin tone. The darker it is, the darker is your pigmentation.
Another cause for discoloration is hormonal – melasma, acne, age spots, freckles. Overactive pigments produce melanocytes.
What aggravates these dark spots? Yep, you guessed it right – the sun.
The Human Skin Color
Melanin is the pigment produced by melanocyte cells, triggered by the enzyme, tyrosinase, Our skin’s color is based upon the actions of tyrosinase, which determines the color of our skin, eyes, and hair. If you cut down tyrosinase activity, pigmentation is controlled. If you find darker parts in your body, this means there is more melanin in those areas.
Melanin comes in two kinds: pheomelanin (yellow to reddish tone) and eumelanin (brown). It actually absorbs the sun’s damaging ultraviolet light to provide some amount of sun protection.
How Skin Lightening Products Work
A skin whitener is specially formulated to counteract the activity of tyrosinase. The active skin lightening ingredients play an important role to achieve this, to slow down melanin production and prevent darkening of the skin.
In addition, skin lightening products are exfoliants, that induces mild skin peeling to help resurface a fresher and lighter skin layer .
It’s as simple as that.
|POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:
- Sun sensitivity
Due to the skin peeling process, fresh skin is more susceptible to sun damage, so avoid unprotected sun exposure as much as possible. After all, why would you go back to the very same factor that caused your skin to darken?
Irritation is also a possibility, especially if skin is very sensitive. The products may not be for you, or you could try the milder skin whitening treatments. If you experience rashes or abnormal itchiness, discontinue use.
How To Keep It That Way
Sun protection is crucial, and will spoil the areas you are working so hard to lighten. So wear at least SPF 45 DAILY between 9am-5pm. Keep this in mind - sunscreen can NOT totally block sun damage, only control it. So protect your skin, whether you’re in a skin lightening regimen or not.
Maintenance also requires minimal use of the product – from once daily to probably 2-3x a week only. Why? Remember what caused your skin discoloration above? They would still be around yah.
Skin lightening is not a fast process. People ask me –
”Maria, will I become white?”
No, it doesn’t happen overnight. The lightest your skin will get is how much your skin will allow it. This is usually closest to the shade you had when you were younger, the inner arm or chest. One to three shades lighter is basically doable.
A skin lightener may or may not work for you, or what worked for one, may or may not be the same for another. This all depends on your skin sensitivity or type. It may show an early improvement or may need more time (1-4 weeks for the skin bleaching soaps, lotions, creams; and months for the skin lightening pills).
Dedicate your time and patience. Results are determined by daily sun exposure and your skin type (darker skin needs a longer time frame).
