Melasma

by Celine
(Norway)

Hi, i'm a mom living in Norway and i'm pregnant for the third time now. I have melasma and been using Obagi which worked well, together with Vitamin A serum. I can't use this now while i'm pregnant and the spots are getting slowly back. I'm going to Mauritius in one week, and i'm certainly going to have some sunbath there. I've tried using sunscreen or suncream with the highest factor before, but the spots would get darker, i weared big sunglasses, caps, even sitting under umbrella......it would still get darker. my melasma is not because of my pregnancy but gene inheritance from my mother and so on...So, is there any chance for me to keep these spots away while i'm on vacation? I'm going to be there for 4 weeks.
And one more: how to remove dark circle around vagina? :)

Answer:

Hi Celine, it is not recommended for pregnant or nursing mothers to use skin whitening products. Why? Because these have not been totally tested if safe, or unsafe, for women during these stages. Other thing, skin whitening products are acid-based, penetrate skin, which is not good when a fetus is developing or when you're producing milk.

Dark spots are normal when pregnant, and they could get worse nearing the 9th month. But these dark spots usually go away a few months after you give birth. Some do stay, and are the only dark spots you should take care of.

If you love sunbathing, do NOT use skin whitening products. Skin during lightening becomes sun sensitive and can become darker than before. Sun avoidance is highly recommended.

Sun damage cannot be prevented. Even with the highest SPF, sunscreen can only control, and NOT prevent, sun damage. Not even under the shade, or the thickest clothing. They can help, yes, but sun damage penetrates always.
