Lightening Skin in the Middle East

Lightening skin in the Middle East is not only popular for women, but for men as well.

Did you know that Arab women are known to have the healthiest and youngest looking skin in the world?

It’s simple – they cover up and avoid the sun - the main cause for premature wrinkling and skin darkening.

Religious and cultural tradition influences protective clothing, while others literally stay indoors, an old custom practiced by their grandmothers especially in Egypt, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia.

Middle East Skin WhiteningTo add, Arab women eat fresher food than the West, and have less stress levels at home and work.

Middle Eastern women are very discriminating when it comes to quality cosmetics. Almost $300M are spent per year for cosmetics and yes, high-tech beauty treatments – skin whitener, spa, steam purification, mud masks, and use argan oil for moisturization (hmmm.. better than emu oil?)

The skin lightening phenomenon has reached the Middle East, where having light and porcelain skin is considered ideal by Middle Eastern women (don’t count out the men too).

While the West marketplace is packed with self-tanning lotions for a copper radiance, the Middle East definition of beauty is the lightness of skin.

As Unilever clarified this preference for whiter skin, it mentioned that "Depending on the notion of beauty prevalent in a particular society, this may be manifested either as lightening or darkening the existing skin tone. This desire cuts across cultures, income levels, educational levels and gender."

Well said.

Considering all skin whitening products on this site can work for all skin types, let us hear from our Middle Eastern contributors how Dermaline, Diana Stalder, Claire Blanche or Greenwhite has worked for them.

Again, thank you to all who posted their tips unselfishly to help other Middle Eastern in the same dilemma.
