Arbutin in your products

by Kelly
(England)

Hello, I read that Arbutin is a derivative of hydroquinone. I am concerned about safety. Although I have discolouration problems and would really like to use the products you feature on your site, I am concerned about the Arbutin element in them.

Is Arbutin safe? I have read it is not and that there is no real evidence to suggest that it is any safer than the dreaded HQ.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Kelly

Answer:

Hi Kelly, the harmful hydroquinone in question is synthetically processed while arbutin is derived from bearberry plant. It is not the synthetic hydroquinone but more appropriately called a
hydroquinone alternative", rather than a "derivative".

Any skin care ingredient can be harmful if used excessively. Skin lightening is not an exception. Even over-the-counter 2% hydroquinone skin whiteners are allowed by the FDA, and dermatologists still prescribe 4% hydroquinone. The trouble comes when users are not familiar with its side effects when misused or overused. The risk is too high.

With arbutin, your risk is significantly reduced and therefore is considered a safe skin whitening ingredient.
